TUBPodcast Awards – WBBL Team of the Year 2018-19

The 2018-19 regular season is in the books and with the Play-Offs on the horizon, it’s time to take a look back and honour those who impressed throughout the year.

Team of the Season:

Holly Winterburn (Leicester Riders) G 17 – PPG 16 – FG% 44 – 3P% 32 – FT% 81 – RPG 5.24 – APG 3.82 – SPG 2.24 – BPG 0.29 – TOPG – 2.35

The league’s most promising young star became the focal point of a talented and experienced Riders team that went on to win the Trophy and finish second in the Championship. The Oregon Ducks recruit signed off her time in the WBBL in style.

  • Trophy Winner
  • Championship runner-up
  • Player of the Month

Ta’Yani Clark (Sevenoaks Suns) G 22 – PPG 10.73 – FG% 44 – 3P% 34 – FT% 72 – RPG 8.27 – APG 5.27 – SPG 2.95 – BPG 0.09 – TOPG – 2.45

A true team player that can do it all offensively, Clark is a matchup nightmare, equally as comfortable stretching the floor or going to working inside. A tenacious defender too, the Suns star averaged a near double-double and led the league in steals.

  • Championship winner
  • Unbeaten regular-season
  • Cup runner-up
  • League leader: steals

Cat Carr (Sevenoaks Suns) G 21 – PPG 14.71 – FG% 44 – 3P% 27 – FT% 82 – RPG 6.57 – APG 5.81 – SPG 1.38 – BPG 0.1 – TOPG – 2

The veteran star led from the front once again as her side collected a second consecutive Championship title. An unbeaten regular season and trip to the Cup Final punctuated a remarkable season for one of the league’s biggest stars.

  • Championship Winner
  • Unbeaten regular-season
  • Cup runner-up

Sarah Toeaina (Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters) G 22 – PPG 20 – FG% 54 – 3P% 44 – FT% 81 – RPG 9.68 – APG 2.77 – SPG 1.5 – BPG 0.27 – TOPG – 1.86

A threat from anywhere on the floor, Toeaina’s dominance on both ends proved instrumental to her team. The Hawaii NCAA alumni put together one of the most eye-catching debut campaigns in the league’s history.

  • Cup Winner
  • Cup Final MVP
  • Player of the Month

Jasmine Joyner (Nottingham Wildcats) G 21 – PPG 17.57 – FG% 48 – 3P% 14 – FT% 79 – RPG 15.33 – APG 1.57 – SPG 1.95 – BPG 3.76 – TOPG – 3.76

Perhaps the most feared defender in the league, the Wildcats big collected more rebounds and rejected more shots than any other player in the Championship this season – to go along with a pair of steals and an efficient 17.5 points per game too.

  • League leader: rebounds
  • League leader: blocks

Note: players were only considered from teams that made the Play-Offs. Statistics taken from Championship appearances.

Coach of the Year:

Len Busch led his side to a second consecutive Championship title and made further history by overseeing an unbeaten 22-0 regular season campaign. The Suns also came within seconds of lifting the Cup. The play-caller took home multiple Coach of the Month awards in what was a truly remarkable season.

Next in line:

No team showed greater improvement this year than Durham Palatinates, Lee Davie’s side finished five places higher in the standings (5th) than in their debut campaign to qualify for the Play-Offs for the first time. His often shorthanded roster also came within a basket of winning the Trophy.

Meanest Play of the Season

A walking highlight machine, no player put more defenders on skates than Chelsey Shumpert this year! With plenty of standout moments already in the bag, Shumpert did this at the start of the month…
