Bates reflects on World Championship victory

Great Britain Men’s Wheelchair Basketball team are World Champions, having claimed the 2018 World Championships title on Sunday thanks to an emphatic 79-62 victory over the USA.

The gold medal winners shot an impressive 60% from the field; George Bates leading the way with a joint team-high 17 points on an extremely efficient 7/8 shooting.

“The game was amazing,” beamed Bates after the buzzer.

“Not many players even get to take part in a World Championships – to come out victorious is an even rarer achievement.

“We played the final as well as we could have played.

“I think we played our game of the tournament and to do it in the final was amazing.

“It’s not really sunk in yet, so I can’t put it into words what it truly means.

“I just know that we are world champions, I’m a world champion and it’s something that no one can ever take away from us.”
