On Sunday, Leicester Riders retained their Play-Off title by defeating London Lions 81-60 at The O2 – the club’s sixth title in two years and the second consecutive treble winning season.
Speaking after the victory, Leicester Assistant Coach Pablo Vazquez shared his thoughts.
“The victory is testament to all the hard work that a lot of people at the club have put in since August, when we first started our preseason,” began Vazquez.
“On a personal note, I’m very happy to have contributed as much as I could – not only this season but the one before as well.
“The winning feeling is just great.
“The Play-Off Final match-up was the one everybody wanted: 1 versus 2, the two strongest teams over the course of the season.
“Both sides knew one another pretty well heading into the game, having played each other 7 times already. In a situation like that, it’s the small things that make a difference.
“Yes we scored 81 points, but our defence was the difference.
“To only give up 4 points to the league MVP (Justin Robinson) shows just how focused the guys were. We knew that was going to be a big factor in the outcome of the game.
“Coach (Rob) Paternostro always puts a lot of emphasis on the defensive end and I think that was the main factor that allowed us to get the job done on Sunday.
“It was an extra special occasion thanks to all the media coverage. The worldwide coverage allowed my family back home to watch – I think the coverage of the Play-Off Final shows just how much of an appetite there is for British basketball.”
