British Basketball concluded its youth summer schedule as the U16 Women ended a battling campaign with an 18th place finish at the FIBA European Championships, Division B.
The team opened the tournament with defeat to Denmark (53-67) before bouncing back in style to earn their 1st win of the campaign against Albania (68-35). A tough end to the group phase, which included losses to Switzerland (39-79), Slovak Republic (36-47) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (43-56), meant GB would have to settle for a finish between 17-22.
Heads held high, the team produced a stunning 4th quarter display to overturn a 10 point deficit and top Iceland (43-42) in the 1st of 2 classification games. It was to be a reversal of fortune in the team’s final encounter, however, as MKD outlasted GB to cling on to a narrow victory (50-53). An 18th place finish confirmed for GB.
A hard-fought campaign by GB with plenty of individual highlights.
Loren Christie finished with impressive averages of 10 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2.7 steals, leading the team across those statistical categories. Ester Little’s contribution of 9.4 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game should also not be overlooked.
