GB Senior Women’s summer of preparation, ahead of the qualification campaign for FIBA EuroBasket Women 2019, concluded in France with a three game closed series in Le Temple-Sur-Lot.
Pitted against a powerful France A roster, GB began their 3-game schedule with a battling defeat (77-56) having struggled to score the ball after the half-time break. Handy and Vanderwal combined for an impressive 33 points, in the loss.
A much improved performance in the second contest proved to be GB’s most fruitful outing, falling short of victory by only 7 points (72-65). A slow start, that saw GB fell behind by 10, proved costly as the visitors matched their hosts blow for blow the rest of the way – GB winning the final 3 quarters by 3 points. Prior, Stewart and Vanderwal joint top scored for GB with 12 points apiece.
GB began their final contest in fine form, shutting down the French in dramatic fashion, holding the hosts to just 14 points in the first half. The game’s momentum, however, swung wildly in the second half as France turned the screw on both ends of the floor. GB could only muster 17 points in the final 20 minutes, while France found their flow to pour in 36 points over the same period. Handy once again led GB with 8 points.
A series with plenty of positives, GB proved competitive for large swaths – if not for a few errant quarters, the scoreline could have read much differently.
Game 1: France A 77-56 GB – Handy 18p-7r, Vanderwal 15p, Stewart 9p-6r, Carr 8p
Game 2: France A 72-65 GB – Prior / Stewart / Vanderwal 12p, Jones 7p
Game 3: France A 50-40 GB – Handy 8p, 6-players 5p
