City of Edinburgh Basketball to enter English National Basketball League at U16 & U18

Next season there will be Scottish representation in the English National Basketball League! City of Edinburgh Basketball Club are set to become the first club in Scotland to compete in the English National Basketball League at U16 and U18 men age groups while remaining in the Scottish Basketball League.

The club will compete in the North-East division alongside teams from Durham, Doncaster, Leeds and York.

In a statement on the club’s website, the club outlined their rational for the move:

In consultation with the players and parents, the Club has taken the decision to pilot a season in the English leagues to provide an extra level of competition, which we believe will allow us to continue to develop our young players. England and Scotland recently relinquished their membership of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and now compete as Great Britain in international competitions. The Club believes that this move will allow their players to play at a higher level of competition but also put them in a better position to come under the eye of GB selectors.

Craig Nicol will coach the teams, assisted by Jim Wright, with home fixtures held at Portobello High School.
