GREAT BRITAIN FALL TO BELARUS IN MINSK

Great Britain’s Senior Women (21) couldn’t make it 3/3, as they faced Belarus (12) in their third and final tournament game in Minsk.

Coach Chema Buceta started his line up with Simpson, Collins, Emanuel-Carr, Handy and Stewart. Janice Monakana – who was not inserted into the starting line-up, had a game-high 16 points with Stewart adding 13 points and nine rebounds.

The quarter started off with Belarus 2-0 up, V. Ziuzkova going 2 of 2 from the line. Stewart immediately responded with a layup but then in 2 minutes of action, Belarus scored 10 quick points. Vanderwal intervened and made a 3 pointer, to trail by 7, before Monakana went on her own mission and scored two quick free throws, followed by a 3 and steal to make it 10-19.

Going into the second and Campbell hit a 3, but Belarus responded in kind with one of their own. Fong Lyew Quee then made a quick lay-up and free throw but again Belarus kept responding. Campbell then went 2 for 2 from the line and hit her free throws with Monakana also going to the line and then Handy hit the 3 with less than four minutes to go. It looked like GB were making the comeback but Belarus responded with a quick succession of points that saw them restore their lead by 10 at the half – 38-24.

Into the third and despite Monakana’s best efforts Belarus took a 21 point lead. What will encourage Coach Chema Buceta is that GB never gave up and going into the fourth they took some hard fouls, with Stewart & Shaw making some dominant low post moves.

GB finish the Minsk tournament with a 2-1 record.
