British Basketball land £1 million of National Lottery funding

British Basketball has secured £1,000,000 of National Lottery funding, from Sport England, to support the delivery of its programmes this year, including its campaign at EuroBasket 2017. The funding will help ensure the Great Britain team receives the preparation it needs, when it competes at EuroBasket 2017 and will provide vital support for other programmes over the 2017-18 funding period.

The programme aims to improve support and recognition for players over the coming months.

Commenting on the announcement, British Basketball Interim Chair Bill McInnes said: “We are encouraged that Sport England continue to see the need to invest in British Basketball. There is a huge appetite for the game and a common desire to drive the sport to new heights in this country.”

The announcement builds on a number of developments since the governing body was set up last autumn:

  • Qualification of senior men’s team for EuroBasket 2017
  • Initial 10 year agreement with clubs for long-term professional league licence, giving clubs the chance to build long-term while driving up standards
  • Appointment of interim executive team
  • Recruitment process for Performance Director underway with enhanced Programme support
  • Constructive relationships with Home Nations to deliver strategy “Transforming Basketball in Britain Together 2016-28”
  • Developing closer working relationships with the NBA and maintaining links with FIBA
