Defeat in Italy ends Great Britain’s EuroBasket Women 2017 hopes

Great Britain won’t be making a fourth successive Final Round appearance after their EuroBasket Women 2017 hopes came to an end in Lucca on Saturday night.

Needing a win against Italy to keep their prospects alive heading into the final game day on Wednesday, Jose ‘Chema’ Buceta and his side were always on the back foot against an opponent who wrapped up their place after moving to 5-0 with a 71-52 success.

There were plenty of WBBL players on display, including the reigning Molten WBBL Young Player of the Year in Georgia Gayle of Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters who made the senior roster for the first time in her career.

Savannah Wilkinson of Barking Abbey Crusaders and Georgia Jones of Manchester Mystics shared 10 points. GB were led by a fine double-double from Azania Stewart who finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds. But, there was no stopping the classy Italians as veteran Laura Macchi haunted GB once again with 23 points.

Unlike the GB men who were competing for 24 spots and successfully made Final Round, there were only 16 tickets available for the women.

Buceta and his players will now have to wait 12 months until next November, when they will commence qualification for EuroBasket Women 2019.
