The opening weekend of the 2016-17 season witnessed the first WBBL silverware dished out as Nottingham Wildcats were crowned Betty Codona Classic Cup winners for the third time.
The holders held on to their cherished BCC title in style by taking down Westfield Health Sheffield Hatters 86-59 in a repeat of the last Final. Ashley Harris put in a typically towering effort with 20 points and nine boards the triumphant hosts.
There was also something to put in the Trophy cabinet for Leicester Riders too, as they beat Manchester Mystics 66-63 in an exciting match-up to win the Betty Codona Classic Plate.
Earlier in the day, Team Northumbria rookie Alison Gorrell hit a dazzling 34 points as the north-east side pipped Barking Abbey Crusaders 60-58 to take third in the BCC Cup. Savannah Wilkinson dropped 30 points for the losing side. It was Sevenoaks Suns who bagged third in the BCC Plate, as they claimed the 62-57 win they needed to outlast Cardiff Met Archers.
Finally, Caledonia Pride rode their way to a 75-67 triumph against fellow newbies Oaklands Wolves in an invitational friendly ahead of their pending WBBL debuts. New Pride signing Natalie Bastain contributed 20 points and Great Britain’s Kyla Nelson had 17 points for Wolves.
