Great Britain power past Luxembourg to keep EuroBasket 2017 ambitions on course

Great Britain’s hopes of reaching EuroBasket 2017 remain on course after they defeated Luxembourg, 95-72, on Wednesday evening in London.

The GB Men won their second straight EuroBasket qualifier thanks in part to a balanced scoring attack, led by a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds from Kyle Johnson in just 18 minutes of action.

Luxembourg fought valiantly for over half the game but midway through the third quarter Great Britain began to find another gear, outscoring the visitors 20-6 to take an unassailable 76-60 lead into the last ten minutes.

In the first half, Luxembourg were able to match whatever Great Britain threw at them, thanks in part to the hot shooting of Alex Laurent.

The Luxembourg forward put in a good shift, scoring 21 of his game-high 30 points in the opening 20 minutes as his side bounced back from a 29-19 first quarter deficit to trail by just two points at the interval (43-41).

After breaking the game open in the third with a 33-19 quarter, GB would continue to build on the lead in the fourth, eventually securing a win which means they are now second in Group G behind the unbeaten Hungary.

It’s Hungary who will visit the Copper Box on Saturday and Great Britain know a victory against the group leaders will be a massive boost ahead of visits to Macedonia and Luxembourg next week.
