Great Britain fall to Slovenia in Ljubljana

Great Britain’s senior men can hold their heads up high after an encouraging performance in Ljubljana’s Stozice Arena, where they were beaten 92-80 by an in-form Slovenia.

After missing both initial preparation games against Portugal and Germany, Dan Clark and Andrew Lawrence scored 24 and 17 points respectively and the London Olympians looked like they had never been away. Kieron Achara added 11 points of his own.

One of the stalwarts of GB’s campaigns in recent years, Clark was brought straight into the starting lineup. Alex Young continued in the point guard position alongside Ben Gordon in the backcourt, with Gareth Murray and Gabe Olaseni completing the five starters.

Slovenia included both Dragic brothers in their team, which had been boosted by a 100% record in preparation up until this point, but it was a committed and quick British side which took the early initiative. There was physical endeavour, which they used to close down space effectively but there was execution too in offence – a theme of the night to come.
