England U16 Men followed up their initial victory over Scotland’s U18s with a second win in as many days. Once again playing at the National Basketball Performance Centre in Manchester, the boys claimed a 63-55 win and more importantly put in a solid team performance as the squad continues their preparation for the Championships in Sofia.
Richard Amaefule top scored in the game with 15 and added 8 rebounds to his tally. Mate Okros dropped 12 with 3 assists and Pierce Maslan had 10 points, 4 assists and 2 steals.
Scotland began the game with a number of great looks that they simply couldn’t knock down. The reprieve allowed England to get their foot in the door in the form of two Pierce Maslan 3 pointers and that broke the game open to give England a 23-10 lead at the end of the 1st. Defence was the highlight for the hosts in the 2nd quarter as the team struggled to find their range but kept their opponents off the scoreboard for the most part. Mate Okros popped up with consecutive 3’s and in a low scoring quarter it was enough for England to move out to 36-18 at half time.
Much like the previous encounter between the sides, England’s lead bred complacency and allowed their opponents back into the contest. The visitors took full advantage and won the quarter 19-24 to trail by 13 going into the last. With the Scots pushing for points, it created opportunities for England but the hosts missed a string of open 3’s that were falling for them in game 1. Fortunately the misses didn’t prove costly as Scotland couldn’t cut the lead by enough before the end of the game.
