Basketball England announced today another positive step forward for the game with the appointment of Clare Wardle as Chair of Basketball England for a three year term.
Clare’s appointment coincides with her imminent move to Coca-Cola European Partners as General Counsel and Company Secretary. Clare has an impressive legal and business background and is currently serving as General Counsel of a FTSE 100 organisation, Kingfisher plc. Clare has previously held leadership positions at Tube Lines Limited and the Royal Mail Group.
Clare also brings valuable insight from another sport, currently serving as a Non Executive Director on the Board of GB Modern Pentathlon. This experience coupled with her extensive knowledge of UK governance and risk management makes Clare an ideal Chair for a Governing Body that has ambitions to grow the sport and develop a strong and credible presence in the sports market.
Clare was appointed as General Counsel & Company Secretary at Coca-Cola European Partners in May 2016 and has considerable international experience in risk, governance, competition and compliance.
Between 2010 and May 2016, Clare has played a leading role in many development and expansion projects as Group General Counsel at Kingfisher – Europe’s largest home improvement retail group. During her time at the FTSE100 Company, she launched the hugely successful Kingfisher Women’s Network, which has seen an increase of senior women within the business.
Clare was previously Commercial Director and General Counsel & Company Secretary for Tube Lines, where she played a key part in a broad range of functions including planning and strategy, procurement, stakeholder relationships, and cost and control processes.
Between 1996 and 2008, Clare held senior roles in the Royal Mail Group, including Head of Legal Services for Post Office Ltd. She began her career as a barrister with multinational law firm Lovells.
Clare is Non-Executive Director of Lee/Fitzgerald Architects and Modern Pentathlon GB, and a member of the GC100 committee – the voice of General Counsel and Company Secretaries working in FTSE100 Companies.
In addition to her many legal qualifications, Clare is also an accredited mediator and chartered secretary.
