Team Northumbria bounced back from last week’s WBBL Championship disappointment to beat Leicester Riders 70-57 on the road, and lock up second spot in the process.
Chris Bunten’s side saw their Championship challenge come to an end last Sunday as they were beaten by the still perfect Nottingham Wildcats.
But the north east club showed no signs of a hangover from that reverse as they responded well to close the regular season on a high note.
The visitors never trailed at LCS Arena but were never full in control either, that is until they closed the third period on a 12-4 run.
That stretch, sparked by a jump shot from Diana Voynova sent them into the final stanza with the impetus, and an eight-point lead.
Northumbria continued to extend their advantage during the last 10 minutes, led by Voynova’s 16 points off 7-of-12 shooting, 15 points from Chloe Bully and a 10-point, 15-rebound double-double from Fiona O’Dwyer.
Alex Smith connected on three triples on her way to a game-high 18 points for Riders, but could not prevent her team slipping to defeat – although this does not impact their final league position with the Leicester club locked in the six seed.
Leicester Riders 57 (18, 31, 44)(Smith 18, Campbell 10, Jones 10)
Team Northumbria 70 (20, 36, 52)(Voynova 16, Bully 15, Asoro 11)
